Business Translation

You put a lot of time and effort in writing original documents. You don't want to lose all of that work when you have it translated.

It’s funny when other people get translation wrong…

And it’s not just the little people you get ‘Lost in Translation’, here are a few examples of the big boys getting things disastrously wrong:

When Kentucky Fried Chicken translated their slogan “Finger likin’ good” into Chinese it came out as “Eat your fingers off”

In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water.

When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that "no va" means "it won't go."

…we’ll make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

You’ve got to admit that they are funny, but you don’t want to be the one to be laughed at.

So, ensuring your marketing material is translated accurately is critical. Not just for your company or your clients it’s vital for your career.

To avoid mis-translation, we only use qualified in country translators. They know the local market and its customs. This ensures that your adverts and promotions have the desired effect when localised into your target language.

Despite the difficult situation at many universities in Nigeria, there is extensive cooperation between German and Nigerian universities and colleges. German universities are highly respected, particularly as many Nigerians now in leading positions in industry, the civil service and academic life studied in during the days of 's economic boom in the 1970s. There are very lively contacts and exchanges between both countries and some 600 Nigerian students are currently studying in Germany. A German lecturer provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) teaches at the University of Ibadan and another vacant position is currently being filled.

Close cooperation at university level also takes place in several alumni follow-up programmes run by DAAD and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, which provide active support for their former students through scholarships or donations of material and equipment. Many other alumni (from InWent for example) are members of organizations such as the Nigerian-German Alumni Association or the Nigerian Association of Teachers of German (NATOG). Individual associations organize annual meetings and seminars. In November 2005, the second annual conference of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Nigerian Alumni Association will be held. Its theme will be University-Industry Cooperation for Development.

There are also a number of individual projects in the area of cultural cooperation. For example, in collaboration with Nigeria’s National Commission for Museums and Monuments, the German Embassy has helped restore the magnificent old city wall of Kano, an ancient city in the North. The project was successfully concluded in spring 2005. Besides the preservation of historical monuments, the dialogue with the Muslim culture of northern Nigeria is also part of bilateral cultural relations.

In the media, the Deutsche Welle has a very successful cooperation programme providing equipment and training support for a range of Nigerian radio and television stations. The Deutsche Welle English-language service and the Haussa Service are both very popular in Nigeria. (See link on cultural and educational policy, media.)
