Business Translation

You put a lot of time and effort in writing original documents. You don't want to lose all of that work when you have it translated.

It’s funny when other people get translation wrong…

And it’s not just the little people you get ‘Lost in Translation’, here are a few examples of the big boys getting things disastrously wrong:

When Kentucky Fried Chicken translated their slogan “Finger likin’ good” into Chinese it came out as “Eat your fingers off”

In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water.

When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that "no va" means "it won't go."

…we’ll make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

You’ve got to admit that they are funny, but you don’t want to be the one to be laughed at.

So, ensuring your marketing material is translated accurately is critical. Not just for your company or your clients it’s vital for your career.

To avoid mis-translation, we only use qualified in country translators. They know the local market and its customs. This ensures that your adverts and promotions have the desired effect when localised into your target language.

Cultural relations

German culture is in keen demand in the Sudan, but there are not enough facilities. Following the closure of the Goethe Institute in 1997, cultural activities – such as film shows, language courses, exhibitions, workshops, lectures – are now being continued by the German-Sudanese Cultural Institute in Khartoum and by a new German-Sudanese cultural circle, which was set up in late 2002. Both of these will in future be more closely tied in with the activities of the Goethe Institute in Cairo. For example, in November 2004 a German dialogue platform was set up in the Cultural Institute as part of the Goethe Institute's regional strategy.

Active German cultural and language outposts in Sudan are the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) regional office in Khartoum (1 expert) and the scholarships and research visits it sponsors. In 2004, DAAD granted 65 scholarships to Sudanese applicants and also financed 29 sur-place scholarships at various universities in the Sudan.

On the academic front, there are a number of cooperation programmes between Sudanese and German educational institutions, including the cooperation between the Ahfad Women's University in Omdurman and the Humboldt University and the Technical University in Berlin (women's studies, development policy) and contacts between Gezira University and the Humboldt University (agriculture, archaeology).

Ongoing impetus for cultural work is also provided through the annual visits and lectures by German archaeological teams. Since 2000, the Federal Foreign Office has funded a conservation project in Musawarat al-Sufra, also inaugurating an open-air museum there in March 2004 – the first of its kind in the Sudan.

Deutsche Welle (DW-TV) has been broadcasting on the cable Khartoum International Channel since 1 November 2000 and DW Radio has been broadcasting programmes in English, German and Arabic since August 2002. DW and the Sudanese Broadcasting Corporation intend to step up cooperation. In December 2003, DW held an initial further-training workshop for Sudanese journalists at the German cultural centre in Khartoum. A sequel event is planned for the end of 2004. The Embassy and the German-Sudanese cultural circle are also supporting an international communication project for children (Big Treasure Chest for Future Kids), in which Sudan will also take part in the course of festivities to celebrate Khartoum’s choice as Arab Cultural Capital 2005.
