Business Translation

You put a lot of time and effort in writing original documents. You don't want to lose all of that work when you have it translated.

It’s funny when other people get translation wrong…

And it’s not just the little people you get ‘Lost in Translation’, here are a few examples of the big boys getting things disastrously wrong:

When Kentucky Fried Chicken translated their slogan “Finger likin’ good” into Chinese it came out as “Eat your fingers off”

In Italy, a campaign for Schweppes Tonic Water translated the name into Schweppes Toilet Water.

When General Motors introduced the Chevy Nova in South America, it was apparently unaware that "no va" means "it won't go."

…we’ll make sure it doesn’t happen to you.

You’ve got to admit that they are funny, but you don’t want to be the one to be laughed at.

So, ensuring your marketing material is translated accurately is critical. Not just for your company or your clients it’s vital for your career.

To avoid mis-translation, we only use qualified in country translators. They know the local market and its customs. This ensures that your adverts and promotions have the desired effect when localised into your target language.

Cultural exchange

Cultural relations are lively and wide-ranging. The small but economically significant minority group of German-speaking Namibians (approx. 25,000) plays an important role here.

Germany's cultural commitment in Namibia is based on the cultural agreement concluded in 1991. It comprises measures in science and institutions of higher education, language promotion, media, films, literature and sports. The Namibian-German Foundation for Cultural Cooperation (NaDS) has been in existence since 1990. A cooperation agreement was signed with the Goethe Institute in December 1999 and the Goethe Centre was established in Windhoek in the spring of 2004.

Two lecturers from the Academic Exchange Service teach at the University of Namibia (UNAM), which was founded 1992 (law and German as a foreign language). Cooperation takes place with German universities (Bremen, Bochum, Humboldt University of Berlin) and with the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg. The Polytechnic of Namibia also cooperates with technical colleges in Germany (Brunswick, Jena, Kiel, Reutlingen, Wolfenbüttel, Lübeck).

Namibians still have a strong affinity with the German language. As the language of business (including crafts, services and tourism) and of culture, it plays an important role. With a circulation of approx. 5,900 copies, the Allgemeine Zeitung daily is the mouthpiece of the German-speaking population. The large majority of German-speaking Namibians is organized in the German Cultural Council, which represents the cultural interests of the minority. 14 hours a day, a German-speaking programme is transmitted by NBC radio.

German is taught as a foreign language to approx. 4,000 pupils at some 30 schools. German as a mother tongue is taught at the German Higher Private School in Windhoek and at 5 state schools.
